Many organizations advocate for poor kids. Shine a Light, however, educates street kids, child soldiers, indigenous children, and many others to advocate for themselves, so that they -- and not some adult speaking for them -- can be actors on the world stage. We teach the most marginalized children in Latin America how to make movies, music, and art, so that can share their unique and profound perspectives. Over the last ten years, children educated by SAL have made more than a hundred films, many of which have won awards at international film festivals, and in 2008, our City of Rhyme Project won the Freedom to Create Prize, recognizing the young artists who have done the most to promote human rights anywhere in the world.
